SEASCAPES
I'm from England, in the British Isles we are never far from the effect of the sea so it always has a special place. There are many unique coasts, landscapes and communities sculpted and influenced by it. The sea, coastlines and effected landscapes, as perceived by us, have a character shaped over millenia or recent.
Seascapes here try to portray the multi-faceted life around this huge global system, with it's own weather and tides.

The balance of the strong plain foreground and sky reflections create leading lines to the headland. The very calm sea with scale provided by Chris standing near the edge. A well balanced interesting photo.

A break in the clouds letting a vertical light column fall on the sea behind the rocks and lighthouse. This, one of my favourite photos, was taken with a 6Mp Bridge camera. As a full image online it works well. I wish I had my current camera, then it could be included for sale.
More information can be seen in the "Location Skye Blog". This actual view was much brighter than is shown here, 1/500 & f/11 kept saturation at bay. A CPL filter was essential the rest is perfect weather.
Something about the reflection of the bright, clean working fishing boat caught my eye. The amount of wind had to be just right for the surface to be like this. The clear blue sky keeps the background uncluttered.
Another 6Mp camera shot, here the foreground gives a feel of distance and scale to the lighthouse under the spotlight.
Everything came together here, especially with the arrival of the seagulls to add movement. The win here is in the layered dark foreground to the brighter sky. The old camera couldn't avoid the halo rings of the sun but it doesn't spoil this shot at all.
Composition is the key here. Foreground interest, leading lines, a scale and distance feature and a clear focus for the viewer.
All about composition, a plain sky and a plain foreground. Scale is found with the lighthouse and electricity poles. More information in "Location Skye".
Sometimes thinking too much doesn't help but there were so many options here, where to put the horizon, how low the viewpoint, how wide to shoot, here the balance is just right.
Simple, uncluttered and lots of small details for interest. The mast and Jib line of the yacht and clear blue and white of the small motor boat in very late evening light ticks all the boxes.
The ancient knights face looks this way only when there is strong shadow and only from a small angle of the sunlight, so not always visible. A CPL filter keeps the sea saturated - the eyes fall immediately to the rocks and face.
To achieve this colour accurate image, manual white balance was taken as an obsession, then just before the view vanished the right image was taken.
From Iona on a fantastic day, just an average daily runabout. The calm water and calm weather make a little local story.
Clear air, calm seas and distant mist were captured here in this shot from an elevated position. The incoming local transport boat adds a flash of interest to the otherwise plain sea.
With rain in the air, surface textures and colours presented several different options for the subjects and atmosphere. Calm waters, vivid colours and a quiet ambience. High reflections and deep blacks are the order of the day.
